Celebrex is an arthritis drug whose safety is now in question after studies linked it to higher risk of heart attack.
Like Vioxx (which was taken off the market last year) Celebrex is a Cox-2 inhibitor, which has fewer side-effects on the digestive system as compared to other pain killers like ibuprofen.
In the light of new findings linking Celebrex to increased risk of heart attack, doctors should not prescribe this drug to arthritis patients with heart conditions. Moreover, drug authorities should urgently further re-assess the safety of this drug.
According to Arthritis experts, Celebrex offered the best pain relief for some, while Pfizer (the drug maker) attested that a larger study found Celebrex safe as other painkillers.
Taking Celebrex off the market is matter of choice between less choice for people with arthritis or decreased risk of heart problems. Read more at BBC news.
