Plasma levels of HDL and Apo A-I have been found to be inversely correlated with the incidence of atherosclerosis. Recently, a Phase II clinical trial demonstrated that a dimeric variant of Apolipoprotein A-I, Apo A-I Milano, reduced the fatty arterial plaque that triggers most heart attacks by an average of 4.2%. A trimerised version of the protein would be expected to have an even more pronounced effect.
All the intellectual property and rights to the preclinical Apo A-I asset from Borean Pharma (currently entering lead optimization) will be acquired by Roche under the terms of agreement which is expected to close during the second quarter of 2006.
