A study headed by Mayo Clinic found that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients taking the drugs Humira® or Remicade have thrice the risk of developing several kinds or cancer and double the risk of getting serious infections.
Humira® is made by Abbott Laboratories while Remicade® by Centocor. Earlier studies focused on the association of these two drugs on lymphoma alone and infections like tuberculosis and pneumonia.
The new study by Mayo Clinic however, has linked these drugs to other cancers, too, including skin, gastrointestinal, breast and lung tumors. The risk has also been quantified as most risky in high doses.
