The US FDA has granted orphan drug destination for CellCept® (mycophenolate mofetil) a drug candidate jointly being developed by Aspreva Pharmaceuticals Corporation and Roche for the treatment of pemphigus vulgaris (PV).
PV is an autoimmune skin disorder characterized by blistering of the skin and mucous membrane. It is painful, may be life-threatening, for which there are currently inadequate treatment options.
CellCept is an immunosuppresant developed by Roche and is currently used in combination therapy in transplant patients. Cellcept is currently under being evaluated in a 77-patient Phase III clinical studies which Aspeva hopes to finish in 2007.
