Norvasc (amlodipine besylate) by Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) is the world’s most prescribed medicine for the treatment of hypertension. The patent of which has been recently challenged by the generic manufacturer, Synthon Pharmaceuticals.
However, a federal court in the Middle District of North Carolina has upheld Pfizer’s U.S. patent (U.S. Patent No. 4,879,303) covering amlodipine besylate (the active ingredient in Norvasc), Judge James A. Beaty ruled that the particular patent is valid and infringed by the generic manufacturer’s product.
Though subject to appeal, the court decision favoring Pfizer prevents Synthon from launching a generic version of Norvasc until September 2007.
