Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: AUXL) reported positive clinical data from two Phase II trials of AA4500 at the American Urology Association's (AUA) western sectional meeting in Maui, Hawaii.
An injectable enzyme, AA4500 demonstrated efficacy and safety in treating patients with Peyronie's Disease -- the development of plaque (or scar tissue) on the shaft of the penis that hardens and reduces flexibility thus causing pain and forcing the penis to bend or arc during erection.
The said condition often prevent intercourse and cause emotional distress such as loss of self-esteem and depression.
According to Dr. Gerald Jordan, lead investigator and Professor of Department of Urology, Eastern Virginia Medical School:
"AA4500 is a non-surgical therapy that suggests effectiveness in treating Peyronie's disease. The drug not only reduced penile curvature but also eliminated pain on erection and increased sexual enjoyment and satisfaction. As a result, physicians may be one step closer to being able to set a new expectation for the future treatment of this condition."
The licensor of AA4500 --BioSpecifics Technologies Corp.--sponsored and monitored the abovementioned trials while Auxilium plans to initiate the product's Phase IIb clinical trials in 2007.
