InterMune, Inc. (Nasdaq: ITMN) has recently reported the preclinical data of its two Phase III drug candidates for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF): Actimmune® (interferon gamma-1b) and pirfenidone, at CHEST 2006 --the annual conference of the American College of Chest Physicians recently held in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The in vitro studies of Actimmune® and pirfenidone demonstrated that both inhibit the fibrotic pathways and, when used in combination, show an additive suppressive effect, thereby indicating that the two compounds may offer complementary approaches to the treatment of IPF.
According to Lawrence M. Blatt, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer of InterMune:
Find more details from the press release."IPF is a disease characterized by fibrosis or scarring of the lungs, and our in vitro studies further expand our understanding of the potential anti-fibrotic mechanisms of our two Phase III compounds.
The data provides insight into the anti-fibrotic activity of Actimmune® and pirfenidone and suggests that co-administration of these two compounds may lead to benefits in patients with IPF."
