In order to distribute an authorized generic version of metoprolol succinate (25 mg dosage strength) in the United States, AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN) entered into a supply and distribution agreement with Par Pharmaceutical (11855577).
However, the said agreement does not affect the availability of AstraZeneca's branded version of metoprolol succinate, TOPROL-XL®, which will be continuously manufactured by AstraZeneca for availability in the United States.
A 25 mg version of metoprolol succinate was launched in the United States yesterday by Eon Labs, part of Sandoz. The 25 mg dose accounts for an estimated 20 percent of AstraZeneca's TOPROL-XL sales in the US.
TOPROL-XL® is the world's leading cardioselective beta-blocker for hypertension, angina pectoris, heart failure, disturbances of cardiac rhythm including especially supraventricular tachycardia, maintenance treatment after myocardial infarction and functional heart disorders with palpitations and for migraine prophylaxis.
