In the middle of the growing concern about the growing epidemic of counterfeit drugs, the National Associations of Boards of Pharmacy launched a new web site called Dangerous Pill and a series of podcasts to educate the public about this important issue.
A recent estimate from the World Health Organization placed the counterfeit global medicine supply chain to 8-10 percent which translates to a $32 billion business.
According to Carmen Catizone MS, RPh, DPh, executive director/secretary of the NABP:
"Although counterfeit drugs are hard to pick out from the real ones, the composition of these drugs are vastly different. Today, our state and federal governments are taking strides to better protect our drug supply and ensure safety for the future. We hope to better educate people on the issue of counterfeit drugs through these new resources."
The Dangerous Pill website is an excellent tool to help educate the public and pharmacists on how easy it is to confuse counterfeit drugs with authentic products because they look so much alike.
