UK Scientists (Pavel Matousek and Charlotte Eliasson), as described in a report scheduled for the March 1 issue of
ACS' Analytical Chemistry, have developed a new form of
Raman spectroscopy (a mainstay tool for identifying molecules) which can probe deep layers of material that are well beyond the reach of conventional Raman spectroscopy.
The method, spatially offset Raman spectroscopy, can analyze through paper packaging, plastic containers, capsule shells, and tablet coatings to verify the ingredients in a pharmaceutical product.
This novel method of detection will enable non-invasive verification. Usually drug packages have to be opened and analyzed. But once they’ve been opened, they cannot be marketed anymore.
The right question I guess regarding this new method is: how accurately this compares to the good old analytical methods, both qualitatively and quantitatively?
We all do not want fake drugs to pass inspection, do we?
