Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy: Novel Non-Invasive Method of Detection of Counterfeit Drugs
UK Scientists (Pavel Matousek and Charlotte Eliasson), as described in a report scheduled for the March 1 issue of ACS' Analytical Chemistry, have developed a new form of Raman spectroscopy (a mainstay tool for identifying molecules) which can probe deep layers of material that are well beyond the reach of conventional Raman spectroscopy.
analytical_chemistry.jpgThe method, spatially offset Raman spectroscopy, can analyze through paper packaging, plastic containers, capsule shells, and tablet coatings to verify the ingredients in a pharmaceutical product.

This novel method of detection will enable non-invasive verification. Usually drug packages have to be opened and analyzed. But once they’ve been opened, they cannot be marketed anymore.

The right question I guess regarding this new method is: how accurately this compares to the good old analytical methods, both qualitatively and quantitatively?

We all do not want fake drugs to pass inspection, do we?
