Schoolgirls in Texas must be vaccinated against the cervical cancer-causing HPV (human papillomavirus), as a mandate ordered by Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Merck's cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil has been approved in June 2006 and is recommended for girls as early as age 11 or 12, the age before they likely become sexually active.
The 3 shot regimen of Gardasil, apparently cost $360.
No wonder Merck (NYSE: MRK) has been working hard to convince state governments across the United States for the mandate of Gardasil vaccine.
Imagine how much Merck would earn in a year if Gardasil vaccination becomes mandatory throughout the country.
Texas is the first state to pass such a mandate.
On the other hand, let us also take into consideration how many girls/women won't have to suffer cervical cancer.
But, I wonder most at what parents would think about this.
