Survey Reveals Reason for Allergic Rhinitis Patients to Discontinue Treatment of Existing Nasal Sprays

According to a survey of more than 1,500 allergic rhinitis sufferers, the main reason for their discontinuing use of prescription nasal spray is the device and formulation-related attributes of the treatment.

nasal_spray.jpgThe reasons for stopping prescribed nasal spray treatment are mainly the following:

  • 62%: medication running down their throats or out of their noses was the primary reason for stopping treatment
  • 44%: bitter taste left by nasal sprays
  • 35%: failure to provide 24-hour relief
  • 32%: uncertainty about the amount of medication received in each spray
  • 31%: lack of clarity regarding when to refill their prescriptions
According to Eli Meltzer, M.D., co-director of the Allergy & Asthma Medical Group and Research Center in San Diego, California who led the survey:

"These results suggest compliance among nasal spray users could improve if new technology overcomes the key barriers to continued use identified by these patients.

This is important because nasal sprays, specifically intranasal corticosteroids, are considered by medical experts as first-line therapy when congestion is a major component of the patient's nasal allergy symptoms."

Asthma is very distressing for people who suffer from this ailment and for the people around

them. Sometimes it is fatal if action is not taken. However, the good news is that this

disease of the lungs can be treated. People have lived comfortably with asthma all through

their lives by adjusting their lifestyle and often taking some medications.

Louise, I have a question: it safe for me to use short-acting asthma medicines for quick relief during an attack? If I'm taking one or more long-term controller meds, is it still safe? Thanks.
