Early next week a group of Atlantic Canadians are expected to file a class-action suit against Perdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin in the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. The suit alleges that the pharmaceutical company misrepresented the drug as suitable for chronic pain relief and underrepresented the addictiveness of long term use. Ray Warner, lawyer for the plaintiffs, said the suit could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The Nova Scotia suit will be partnering with two suits filed in June in the Ontario Supreme Court who have asked for $175 million in total damages. Last May, a Conn. subsidiary was fined more that $634 million US in penalties and at the time the U.S. Assistant Attorney General stated that Perdue “put its desire to sell OxyContin above the interests of the public.”
