Accentia Biopharmaceuticals has reported that results from its trials for SinuNase supports theories that most, if not all, chronic sinusitis is as a result of fungal infection.
In support of the theory advanced by Mayo Clinic researchers that the cause of chronic sinusitis was an immune reaction to a fungal infection, not an allergy or bacterial infection as previously thought, Accentia acquired exclusive worldwide rights to market and sell products based on the Mayo Clinics patented treatment method using amphotericin B.
Subjects from the trial were all required to have well documented cases of chronic sinusitis. At the time of enrollment all patients had nasal mucin collected and those samples were subsequently tested for eosiophillic major basic protein (eMBP). Of the first fifty specimens to be analyzed all have tested positive for eMBP and Accentia believes the findings support fungal induced inflammation as the cause of chronic sinusitis.
