Merck & Co announced that it was ending enrollment and vaccination of volunteers in what was previously hailed as a promising experimental AIDS vaccine.
The trial, called STEP, was an international phase II trial in unaffected volunteers at high risk for getting HIV.
The National Institutes of Health released a statement stating the review of interim results found that the vaccine did not prevent HIV nor did it limit the amount of the virus in those that developed HIV. The Merck vaccine failure is a "deep disappointment and a scientific setback for the AIDS vaccine field," stated the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition.
