Mantatory Mental Health Screening for Our Children Part 1
sad%20child.jpgPreviously I had posted in response to a comment that had been posted after one of my articles. The comment contained a link to a petition to stop TeenScreen which is the testing of children for depression and suicidal tendencies.

Ok, so I find the petition's argument biased, uniformed and misleading and the TeenScreen site equally as self-serving but what about the actual issue of screening children for mental illness?  This is not a simple issue. Firstly, I think screening only for depression and suicidal tendencies is myopic. If we are going to allow our children to be tested, get them tested for every type of mental health issue. Test them for eating disorders, bi-polar disorders, anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders to name but a few. Have the children take a complete physical and mental health check-up. Children with mental health issues tend to fall through the cracks. Their mental illnesses are chalked up to personality traits and instead of proper medical care, disciplinary actions are taken. If there was a way to point out potential problems what parent wouldn't want that option made available to them. If it were possible to screen for children with the potential to become sociopaths wouldn't society benefit from this knowledge?

So those are some of the positive aspects of mental health screening for our children, my next article will cover the flip side of this argument; the downside to mandatory screening.

I previously wrote about the benefits of screening our children for mental health issues. That all stemmed from a comment made to another article I'd written that sent me off on a bit of a rant. Now the downside. Firstly, I have... [Read More]

Should we introduce mandatory mental health screening for young people or soldiers? The issue was the subject of some controversy in the US in 2004, when a mandatory system was first proposed and where an organisation called TeenScreen has been... [Read More]

I can see why people feel that it is not a good idea, I'm against this type of testing being mandatory for our children but I wouldn't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are aspects and ideas here that can be of benefit to our children they just need to be refined and reDEfined.
Thanks for posting!

About your comment on my argument being biased, uniformed and misleading you should dig in and find the real truth.
Thousands of children have been screened and given a diagnois by individuals who are not doctors. They are herded like cattle into rooms given a 10 minute screening and then in many cases told - they have OCD, or some other type of anxiety disorder, or phobia.
These are children. Children who are never given the chance to explain why they answer certain questions yes or no, all without a parent present.
Should we remove the civil rights of these children or parents? Should we allow millions of children to be labeled, with no proof these screenings work?
It is not a matter of debate, each person in this country has certain civil rights that must be protected at all cost, including OUR children.

PS the lawsuit you spoke of is in Indiana not Michigan.

Thank you for pointing out the error, I had misread Michiana for Michigan, and I have made the correction.

Your bias is obvious even in your comment. One cannot be passionate about something without bias. I stated why I found your arguement to be misinformed here and stated my opinion on government legislating away civil rights here.
Your arguements would be better presented with links to sites that have proof of your allegations that "Thousands of children have been screened...and then in many cases told - they have OCD, or some other type of anxiety disorder, or phobia." It's the "thousands" and "many", without proof, that I have a problem with. I'm sorry you that you disagreed with my opinion however, I appreciate that you took the time to write and share yours.

Did someone say proof of "thousands"?

Here's a reference from 4 years ago that says ten thousand: http://www.namiscc.org/News/2003/Newsletters/Spring/McManVol5-10.htm

Here's a reference that says in Colorado over 350 youths were suicide screened using TeenScreen's survey. They found that over 50% were at risk of suicide and 71% screened positive for psychiatric disordersreferred.http://www.psychsearch.net/colorado.pdf

Here's a reference that shows the advisory board of TeenScreen is full of pharmaceutical ties:
http://www.teenscreentruth.com/Teenscreen_Advisory_Board.htm

There's plenty of references on the net if someone was inclined to learn about it.
