Pfizer Inc. reported that clinical trials of its kidney cancer drug, Stutent, has shown potential as a treatment for advanced gastric cancer. Early clinical data from trials of Stutent, sunutinib, showed anti-tumor activity in patients previously treated with chemotherapy that had advanced gastric cancer.
It is estimated that gastric cancer, stomach cancer, causes nearly one million death per year and represents almost 2% of newly diagnosed cancers in the U.S. but is much more prevalent in Korea, Japan, Great Britian, South American and Iceland. It is associated with a high salt diet, smoking and low intakes of fruits and vegetables.
Stutent was approved by the FDA in January 2006.
