A review of patients at the Mayo Clinic suggests that the warning for the anti vomiting drug, droperidol, may not be needed.
"We found no change in bad heart rhythms with the commonly used low-dose droperidol versus no droperidol use in a very large number of surgical patients," comments Dr. Gregory A. Nuttall of the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., lead author of the new study.
The warning has been in effect since December 2001 when the FDA issued a black box warning of the risk of arrhythmias in surgical patients receiving droperidol.
The original FDA warning can be found here.
