Health blogs and health watchdogs have been saying that the fluoride in our drinking water is unhealthy for a long time and studies have been conducted as to the validity of their claims now there is a report that give clear evidence of their theories.
The National Research Council (NRC) released a published review of the effects of fluoride on the thyroid. Silicofluoride, which is added to 2/3 of U.S. drinking water to prevent tooth decay, was never tested for safety.
"A low level of thyroid hormone can increase the risk of cardiac
disease, high cholesterol, depression and, in pregnant woman, decreased
intelligence of offspring," said Kathleen Thiessen, PhD, co-author of the government-sponsored NRC report.
The NRC found that in human studies fluoride concentrations in thyroids exceeded that found in other soft tissue with the exception of the kidneys. IT also found that fluoride adversely affects thyroid and parathyroid hormones which affects bone health.
Congress is being urged to stop water fluoridation until hearing can be held based on new scientific evidence that fluoride is ineffective and has serious health risks.
For more effects of fluoride from the NTC study read their full report or read through an interview done with Dr. Kathleen Thiessen, co-author of the government-sponsored NRC report.
A great site to give you the latest news about fluoride is the Fluoride Action Network. It covers all information needed to make an informed decision regarding fluoridation and includes a link to an online petition against the practice that will be sent to Congress.
