Shire plc (NASDAQ:SHPGY) released data from a 12 month long study on the effects and tolerability of the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) patch, Daytrana. Results of the study demonstrated that significant tolerability and improved symptom control in children aged 6 to 12 years old.
"In our study, children with ADHD experienced effective ADHD symptom control improvement when using DAYTRANA for 12 months, improving their ability to maintain focus and concentration in and outside of the classroom," reported investigator Frank A. Lopez, M.D., neurodevelopmental pediatrician at the Children's Developmental Center, Winter Park, Fla. "Importantly, this year- long study showed that DAYTRANA maintained a favorable safety profile throughout the study period, with adverse events consistent with previous DAYTRANA studies."
Daytrana is the first and only patch medication that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for children between the ages of 6 and 12. Side effects were similar to other methylphenidate medications and the most common included decreased appetite, headache, upper respitory tract infection, cough, fever and weight loss.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) about 4.4 million U.S children between the ages of 4 and 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD. It is one of the most common disorders in children and teens and is a neurobiological psychiatric disorder in which the person shows a persistent pattern of inattention with or without hyperactivity/impulsivity.
