Science's annual survey of the best companies in biotech, biopharma, pharmaceutical and other related industries to work in for has been released and it's top company is a surprise.
The list is as follows with last years ranking in brackets:
- Genentech (1)
- Amgen (4)
- Schering-Plough (17)
- Genzyme (6)
- Novartis (9)
- DuPont (-)
- Monsanto (-)
- AstraZeneca PLC (5)
The surprises were numerous starting with Genentech dropping out of 1st place for the first time in 6 years. Equally surprising was Schering-Plough's jump from 17th to 4th. This year's list also included 2 non-traditional companies Monsanto and DuPont.
The survey results are based on answers from over 3,000 participants who were asked to to list firms the considered best, average and worst employers in various industry sectors. Participants had to rate each company on 23 characteristics such as financial strength, adaptation to change and research-driven environment.
The survey also offered respondents the possibility of voicing their opinions on the industry and over-all the responses were positive. The report did have several suggestions for respondents on how to improve the industry's negative reputation: the report seems to have several suggestions from the survey respondents:
"Be honest, ethical and more accountable, and educate and communicate with the public." That means admitting mistakes, answering tough questions, being forthcoming and open, increasing transparency, and earning the public's trust."
