It's rare I find my sources on the tech pages but a cell phone that monitors your health is interesting.
NTT DoCoMo Inc. (NYSE:DCM) unveiled a prototype phone that monitors your health. It's touted as a "hassle-free way of keeping track of your health" said company spokesman Noriaki Tobita.
The phone has a built in motion sensor that detects body movement and can calculate how many calories you burn. It can tell if you are resting, running, climbing stairs or walking and then count the calories you are burning while doing so. More than that, it can keep track of jogging or walking workout with a log that monitors and records time, distance and calories burnt so you can set targets. Add in that it can calculate your body fat and has another sensor that takes your pulse and it's a pretty impressive little gadget. That's not all this little wonder phone can do though. It also has a breath analyzer, you just blow into a tiny hole on the side of the handset for 3 seconds and it will tell you if your breath is bad or not.
One more addition to the phone is a stress analyzer that offers advice. When Tobita answered "Yes" to questions like "Do you feel lethargic?" and "Do you go to bed after midnight?" the phone flashed a message on its screen warning that he was under a lot of stress.
The prototype is still undergoing testing of some of its other features such as the ability to track meals and caloric intake and a networking capacity to allow users to share information.
While you might want one of these Wellness phone, NTT DoCoMo has not set a release date and worse, the Tokyo based company phones are not sold overseas. So for now, at least, you'll have to check out your bad breath the old fashioned way, by blowing into your hand.
