A consumer safety warning was issued by The Physicians Coalition for Injectable Saftey today. The Coalition warns that fat dissolving, fat melting, injection lipoysis and any other injectable treatments to reduce body fat are an unproven medical treatment.
"Injections to unwanted fat, using compounded pharmaceuticals, or
herbal agents, claim a medical result -- the degradation (breakdown) of adipose (body fat) and it's excretion from the body," said Julius Few, MD, associate professor of plastic surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, in Chicago and a member of the Coalition. "To date, the substances in these injections have not gone through FDA sanctioned clinical trials or the research necessary to document the medical results claimed or clearly identify the potential underlying complications."
The Coalition offers the following question to ask before considering a cosmetic injectable procedure:
- Ask the doctor if she is qualified and treats similar conditions on a regular basis in an appropriately licensed and equipped medical facility.
- In the injectable a brand that is approved for use by the FDA and is it appropriately labels and packaged to reflect its authenticity and approval
- Has proper procedure been followed. Has the doctor evaluated the condition, recommended treatment, clearly explained possible negative outcomes and offered alternative?
If you have any question about whether the injectable you are interested in is FDA approved or are looking for more information check out InjectableSaftey
