Biogen Idec is publishing preclinical data that suggests that its anti-lingo-1 anitbody can promote myelin production and placement. Myelin, which acts as a protective cell covering around nerve fibres, is destroyed the cells lose their ability to send signals and can die. Reseachers found, though only f
rom tests on animals that anti-lingo-1 may reverse that damage. Lingo-1 is one of the targets that is being tested in Multiple Sclerosis research. It seems to be a molecular switch that blocks the ability of cells in the central nervous system to produce myelin. Anti-lingo-1 appears to block the blocker and has the potential to repair damage.
One in every thousand people suffers from M.S. a debilitating disease that affects the central nervous system. There is currently no cure however, many treatments exist that slow its progression.
