Nastech Pharmaceutical Company Inc, (NASDAQ: NSTK) announced that it has started Phase 2 of its clinical trial of PYY3-36 Nasal Spray for obese patients. The study will enroll approximately 500 obese patients for a six-month period. The intent is to study 3 different doses of PYY3-36 against a placebo and a sibutramine Meridia.
"Nastech has developed a patient friendly, non-invasive nasal spray dosage form of a naturally occurring peptide, PYY, which in the body signals the brain that you have consumed sufficient calories and to therefore stop eating," stated Steven C. Quay, M.D., Ph.D., Chairman, President and CEO of Nastech.
PYY, Peptitde YY, is a naturally occurring hormone that is believed to function as an inhibitor of food consumption. As there are an estimated 1.6 billion adults classed as overweight and 400 million who are obese, finding a simple, easy to use treatment is a priority.
