Dr Anthony D. Loebel of Pfizer Inc. ( NYSE:PFE) and colleagues have found that Ziprasidone, sold as Geodon, was well tolerated and showed long term efficiency in patients that suffer from schizophrenia who did not respond to other drug.
According to a clinical study published in the Journal of Psychiatry, Loebel and his
colleagues studied patients with a diagnosis of treatment-resistant schizophrenia who had been treated for one year with ziprasidone, an atypical antipsychotic. The study involved 62 patients in which 32 received ziprasidone and 30 received clorpromzine. Of the 41 patients who responded to both drugs, 30 were able to maintain this response on ziprasidone.
"Over 1 year of continuous treatment, ziprasidone was well tolerated, with a relatively low rate of discontinuation, and was associated with favorable effects on weight and metabolic parameters," the researchers report. There were no changes in movement disorder measures" said Loebel.
Loebel and his colleagues did conclude that further studies were needed to confirm the preliminary findings.
