
Plavix is an oral anitplatelet agent used in the treatment of stroke, heart attack or poor circulation. Plavix worked to keep platelets in the blood from sticking together and forming clots.
Marketed by Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) and sanofi-aventis (EPA:SAN) Plavix prevents blood clots that when formed in the brain or heart can lead to stroke or heart attacks.
Plavix is usually indicated for patients that have had a recent heart attack, stroke or peripheral artery disease. It has also been indicated for patients with unstable angina and non-Q wave heart attacks.
Plavix should not be taken by anyone with a stomach ulcer, liver disease or any conditions that cause bleeding.
Most common side effects include itching, a purple rash, diarrhea, excessive tiredness, headache, dizziness and upset stomach.
According to DrugTopics Plavix is the 7th best selling brand name drug according to retail sales in 2006.
