A small study of 10 people by The Hull York Medical School found that patients had less fatigue when eating dark chocolate with a high cocoa content.
Researchers were surprised but believe that it is possible that dark chocolate may have an effect on the brain chemical serotonin.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a condition with a variety of symptoms but the most common is chronic fatigue.
Study leader Professor Steve Atkin, an expert in endocrinology, said "Dark chocolate is high in polyphenols, which have been associated with health benefits such as a reduction in blood pressure. Also high polyphenols appear to improve levels of serotonin in the brain, which has been linked with chronic fatigue syndrome and that may be a mechanism."
More research is needed to confirm the results of the study and the chocolate formulation used in the study is not available to the public. Also, dark choclate has already been linked as beneficial to high blood pressure and to the heart.
