Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disease that causes changes in the brain. A type of dementia, it affects a person's memory, mood and behavior. Most commonly affecting people over the age of 65, its cause is unknown but plaques form in the brain causing a disruption in the flow of information between neurons. Exelon is a cholinesterase inhibitor that works by increasing the amount of acetylcholine in the brain that is lower in people with Alzheimer's disease.
Parkinson's disease dementia is a part of the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). Approximately 20% of PD patients will develop dementia which is caused by protein deposits in the nerve cells. Onset of PD dementia usually occurs 15 - 20 years after the diagnosis of PD.
