Dr. Francois Giuliano of Raymond Poincare Hospital, Garches, France and colleagues conducted a study whose results show that Eli Lily's (NYSE:LLY) Cilais is safe and effective for men with spinal cord injuries who have erectile difficulties.
186 men were randomly assigned either Cialis (tadalafil) or a placebo for a 12 week period. Of the 126 men in the treatment group that completed the study, almost 85% found that the drug improved their erections compared to just under 20% of those on placebo. 78.5% also said that it improved their ability to engage in sexual activity.
This may offer men with spinal cord injury and their partners a "more natural sexual experience," they add. "Hence, tadalafil may be the agent of choice for spinal cord injury patients who do not want to plan their sexual activity around medication dosing," the researchers conclude.
According to the researchers, only 25% of men with spinal cord injury can achieve erections adequate for intercourse without medical intervention. Cialis belongs to the class of drugs known as oral phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors which are used as a tretment for erectile dysfuntion.
