iPod, Pager or Insulin Pump? Can You Tell?

MiniMed.jpg

This is the MiniMed pump, an unobstrusive gadget that isn't an iPod nor a pager. It's an insulin pump. Small and lighweight the MiniMed Paradigm 522/722 comes in clear, blue, smoke and purple. You can even choose a skin to personalize your unit. The devices hold a maximum capacity of 176 - 300 units which meets the needs of most people who take up to 50 units a day.

An Italian study found that diabetics using insulin pumps such as these had 70% less therapy-related dissatisfaction that those patients that used multiple injection therapies.

The MiniMed pump, and other like it, are finally giving diabetics the privacy, a little bit of style and choice that they deserve.

For more specifics on the device check out their webpage MiniMed Paradigm

Uh, I wear and use the Paradigm insulin pump and am confident in saying that now one under the age of 80 would confuse it with an iPod.

Please accept my apology. I did not mean to belittle your illness. My foster mother was diabetic and I understand the difficulties that are associated with this terrible disease!
My point was that it's nice to see that the medical community is taking steps towards making the necessary diabetic equipment less obvious and more "stylish" (for lack of a better word). Most people I know, while not ashamed, prefer to keep their illness private and discrete. This gadget offers them that opportunity.

You weren't belittling me. Actually I was sort of making fun of the iPod comparison - so I was being hard on you!

I'm new to an insulin pump and I absolutely love it. Combined with a constant glucose meter you I in essense have an articifical pancreas- albiet external.

ompared to 20 years ago where blood sugar test took two minutes using cumbersome unweildy equipment you're right - todays technology is amazing

Now if they COULD make it the size if an iPod....

all the best :) James..

I think I would be more insulted if someone said I was wearing a pager.
