
The 2007 edition of the European Commission's annual report of research and development spending places Pfizer Inc. at the top of the heap outspending all other industries.
Pharmaceuticals and biotechnology became the top R&D spenders beating out the technology heardware and equipment sector this year. In European based companies GlaxoSmithKline found itself in 7th position. Overall Pfizer (5.8 bn EUR) found itself ahead of the top European company, DaimlerChrylser (5.2 bn EUR).
The report finds a strong increase in R&D investment by pharmaceuticals, e.g. Merck (+24.3%), AstraZeneca (+15.5%), Roche (+15.5%), Johnson & Johnson (+12.9%) and GlaxoSmithKline (10%).
