
Swiss pharmaceutical AstraZeneca (NYSE:AZN) was 8th on the list of R&D research spending with a 2006 expenditure of $2.95 bn EUR and 7th for overall sales in 2006. AstraZeneca saw its Seroquel XR for schizophrenia get FDA approval this year and received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to sell its cholesterol drug, Crestor, to also treat clogged arteries. Last week the FDA issued final assessment of studies on Nexium and found there was no likely cardiac risk associated with long term use of the drug. The company has 31 Phase III drugs , 19 in Phase II and 39 in Phase I.
