Tekturna, a high blood pressure medication that was previously approved last March by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has received new approval for its combined form of hypertension medication and diuretic.
Hydrochlorothiazide, a compound that inhibits the kidneys ability to retain water, has been added to Tekturna's high blood pressure medication aliskiren. Aliskiren is a direct renin inhibitor (DRI) which targets renin an enzyme responsible for hypertension.
Tekturna HCT is available in tablet form and is intended for use by patients that have been unsuccessful in controlling their high blood pressure with a single drug. Novartis expects the medication to be available in early February.
Side effects of this new hypertension/water pill can include dizziness, cough, tiredness, flu-like symptoms, diarrhea and less commonly, skin rashes.
