BD Diagnostics (NYSE: BDX) announced that it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for BD GeneOhm StaphSR assay.
The assay is the first test available that can rapidly and simultaneously identify two strains of healthcare-associated infections, Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) through blood cultures.
"The launch of the BD GeneOhm StaphSR assay in the United States further demonstrates BD's commitment to helping healthcare providers rapidly identify, prevent and control HAIs," said Vince Forlenza, Executive Vice President, BD. "It also illustrates our desire to provide customers with a complete menu of assays and tools to combat these potentially deadly infections."
Providing results in two hours, directly from positive blood cultures, the assay is easy to perform and requires less technologist time that traditional methods which can take up to two days to generate. It is believed that providing physicians with the information faster will result in decreased mortality and length of stay. It will also allow for more appropriate isolation procedures and more specific therapies.
