
The positive effects of the antidepressant trazodone’s have been revealed to be statistically significant. One such positive effect being the normalization of sleep patterns of those involved in the study. This means more sleep and less times awakening during the night.
This once-daily formula is said to be a solution for those who do not take medications as prescribed. In particular, antidepressants have a slow onset of action and exacerbate sleep disturbances. This can lead to the cessation of the regiment which can lead to more severe symptoms of depression and even suicide. Therefore, by making a pill a once-daily formula, and eliminating the negative side effects is a positive step in treating those with depression and more importantly, keeping patients on the regiment.
The drug was tested on patients with major unipolar depression disorder in 40 centers across Canada and the United States. There was a significant drop out rate but according to the study this was not any better or any worse than other depression studies.
Trazodone is an antidepressant that acts as a dual serotonin agonist and a serotonin reuptake inhibitor which means that it increases serotonin in the brain, inhibition at the neuronal serotonin feedback system involved in the regulates serotonin and finally inhibits the reuptake of the drug allowing more of this neurotransmitter to be active in the brain. It helps sleep patterns by acting as a sedative helping insomnia. It also restores deep sleep cycles thus decreasing time spent awaking during the night.
Depression is a prevalent mental illness that affects hundreds of millions of people. Drug therapy helps to mediate the chemical irregularities that are thought to play a significant role in the onset and the prevalence of the illness.
