A new study suggests that a vaccine that blocks angiotensin II receptors could eventually replace hypertension medications.
Blocking the angiotensin II receptors results in relaxing the blood vessels and thus reduces blood pressure. The benefit of this type of vaccine is that patients would only have to receive treatment two or three times a year and would eliminate the need for daily medication.
>"We found the vaccine was well-tolerated, and it did lower blood pressure in hypertensive people," said vaccine inventor Martin Bachmann, of Cytos Biotechnology in Schlieren,
Bachman believes that his study showed that the vaccine not only eliminates the inconsistent medication dosing but also works best in the morning.
More testing and larger trials are needed before the vaccine would become available to the general public.
