The National Association pf Boards of Pharmacy announced that it had listed 79 online drug outlets as "not recommended" for operating in conflict with standards developed by NABP.
Currently over 200 "suspiciously operating Intrenet drug outlets" are being reviewed however the 79 were listed because:
- 71 do not require a valid prescription – a valid prescription is a legal requirement for dispensing prescription drugs in the US;
- 35 offer foreign or non-FDA-approved drugs – it is illegal to sell such drugs in the US
- 36 have a physical address located outside of the US – to sell prescription drugs legally in the US,a pharmacy must be based in the US and licensed in each state where it practices pharmacy.
NABP recommends that patients only purchase medication online through Internet pharmacies that have been accredited by VIPPS (Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites). These more than 12,000 web pharmacies are listed on the NABP web site as "recommended".
